The king’s second wife’s son, Bharat, in a stunning display of respect and character, refused to accept the throne, as he knew it was not rightfully his. Ram then told him that their father’s kingdom’s destiny could not be jeopardised and that he must accept his father’s decision and honour the wish granted to his mother and so he took a pair of Ram’s slippers and placed them on the throne as a symbol of who the real ruler was and swore to administer the kingdom in Ram’s name.
