Hearing Sita's cries for help, a demi god in the form of a vulture attacked Ravan, but the evil king was too powerful and defeated the vulture by cutting off it’s wing, which sent it crashing to the ground below. As the flying chariot sped away leaving the vulture dying, Sita clandestinely threw parts of her jewellery from the chariot, to provide clues to Ram as to the direction in which Ravan was taking her.
